FAQs

An antique carved oak settle is a wooden bench featuring a high back, solid armrests, and frequently a hinged seat opening to a storage chest beneath, originating in medieval and early modern European interiors.

Traditional oak settles were constructed from solid oak timber using mortise and tenon joinery, held together with wooden pegs and featuring hand-carved relief panels across the back and base.

Authentic period settles exhibit signs of hand-planing, irregular peg placement, natural wood shrinkage across the grain, uneven hand carving, and accumulated patina within recessed areas.

Position the carved oak bench in a hallway, entryway, or boot room, pairing the dark timber with light, neutral walls and textured linen cushions to complement its substantial proportions.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice a year, ensuring the piece is placed away from direct heat sources and damp areas.
