This 19th-century open shelving unit is a large Anglo-Indian what-not stand constructed from dark brown padauk wood with a rich timber finish. The three-tier structure displays intricate foliate carving, including heavy vine and grape motifs across the upright supports, paired with pierced aprons under each shelf and carved animal feet at the base. It measures 145 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Such a piece suits a living room, hallway, or study as an accent display unit for books, ceramics, or decorative objects. The solid wood construction provides stable open storage, while the ornate Victorian and Gothic design elements bring distinct period character to traditional or eclectic interiors.

Anglo-Indian furniture from the mid-19th century combines traditional European functional forms with indigenous Indian ornamental carving techniques, utilizing dense native hardwoods such as padauk, teak, and rosewood.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense, dark native timbers including padauk, ebony, and rosewood, which were well-suited to intricate high-relief hand carving and resisting climate-induced warping.

Authentic pieces feature deep hand-carved foliate or vine motifs, pierced aprons, animal-form feet, and visible hand-tool marks along structural joints and unpolished backings.

Position ornate dark timber shelves against plain, light-toned walls to emphasize their silhouette, pairing them with minimalist ceramics or glassware to create a balanced visual contrast.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to avoid splitting, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying clear beeswax polish along the grain to preserve the wood.
