The wood displays a rich grain pattern and deep colour throughout the visible surfaces. It provides an authentic antique furnishing for domestic spaces requiring traditional English seating solutions.

FAQs

A settle is a traditional high-backed wooden bench with armrests, designed originally to shield sitters from cold draughts in living spaces and entrance halls. Popular in Britain from the medieval era through the Edwardian period, they often featured decorative carving and solid oak construction.

Edwardian settles were primarily constructed from solid woods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Oak was favoured for its durability, dense grain, and ability to hold detailed hand-carved motifs like floral friezes and foliage.

Authentic Edwardian settles feature precise timber joinery, hand-carved ornamentation, and natural surface wear consistent with age. Look for honest construction techniques such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, as well as a rich patina in areas of frequent contact.

Place a high-back settle in an entryway, boot room, or hallway to create architectural interest and functional seating. Soften the solid timber frame by adding a textured linen seat cushion or wool throw to balance modern and traditional elements.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers moisture and lustre. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
