Description

A fine 19th century Grand Tour verdigris patinated bronze of Jupiter enthroned in all his majesty, holding a sceptre and a thunderbolt. After the 1st century AD originally discovered in Hungary and now housed in the British Museum. Good example, well cast and finished, presented on a green marble block base. Probably English, circa 1870.

This nineteenth-century Grand Tour bronze figure depicts Jupiter seated upon an architectural throne, holding a tall sceptre in his raised right hand. The sculpture displays a dark verdigris patinated finish with varied dark green and metallic bronze tones across the muscular torso, the draped garments, and the bearded face crowned with laurel leaves. The casting rests upon a rectangular dark bronze plinth, which is further supported by a mottled green and white marble block base with polished sides. Measuring 33 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 11.5 cm deep, this decorative object suits display upon a library desk, a mantelpiece, or within a cabinet amongst other classical works. It brings traditional nineteenth-century craftsmanship into a study or drawing room.
