A Minton Porcelain Coffee Can Decorated by Thomas Steel C.1830

Description

A fine and rare Minton porcelain coffee can and saucer c.1830. The slightly larger than normal can and saucer, the shape closely copying Sevres 'gobelet litron et secoupe'. Both the can and saucer are very finely decorated by Thomas Steel with a panel of summer flowers in a basket alongside fruit on top of a marble table, all reserved on a deep cobalt blue ground enriched with classically inspired gilding by Thomas Till with flowers, leaves and urns. 

Marked with a very faint + sign on a circle in gold 

For a pair of vases with similar flower and fruit paiting along with the same mark, see pages 165 - 167 of David Manchip's book on Ceramic Artists. 

Condition: A few chips below the handle restored.  Re-gilding to the handle. A short hairline crack and associated chip to the saucer restored. Inner gilded band of the saucer re-gilded.

Fine Antique English Porcelain
