Chinese Carved Pale Green Jade / Hardstone Cockerel, c.1930–40

An attractive early 20th century Chinese carved pale green translucent hardstone figure of a cockerel or rooster, presented on a finely carved fitted hardwood display stand.

The bird is depicted standing alert with its head raised and an impressive sweeping tail forming the dominant feature of the composition. The plumage has been individually worked with incised feathering, particularly across the wings and large fan-shaped tail, producing an elegant silhouette when viewed from either side.

The stone is an attractive pale celadon to grey-green colour with areas of greater translucency, subtle green mottling and naturally occurring tonal and mineral variation visible throughout. From visual examination the material is consistent with a jade-family Chinese hardstone; it is conservatively described as jade/hardstone as no laboratory gemological testing has been undertaken to determine the precise mineral species.

The carving measures approximately 7 cm × 6 cm × 2 cm, excluding the stand, and weighs approximately 75.6 g, also excluding the stand.

The fitted dark hardwood stand is particularly attractive, with pierced scrolling decoration, shaped feet and a recessed upper platform cut specifically to accommodate the bird’s feet. It complements the carving extremely well and forms an important part of its presentation.

Condition: Displays very well overall. There is old damage/restoration around one leg/foot and apparent losses/damage affecting the feet, visible when the carving is removed from its stand. There are also minor age-related marks, surface wear and natural inclusions/fissures. The fitted stand conceals much of the foot damage when displayed and the figure remains visually impressive.
