Antique Tibetan Nepalese Bronze Green Tara Buddhist Deity Himalayan Shrine Statue C.1900

An impressive antique Nepalese / Newar bronze figure of Green Tara (Śyāmatārā), seated within an elaborate Himalayan Buddhist shrine throne and circular aureole, probably dating to the late 19th to early 20th century.

Tara is depicted seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, with the right leg pendant and the left leg folded. Her right hand is lowered in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and compassion, while the left hand rests lower beside the body in association with the lotus motif.

The figure is richly adorned with jewellery, armlets, a high ornamental headdress and finely patterned robes. A lotus appears beside the left shoulder, while behind the deity rises an elaborate architectural shrine incorporating a circular prabhāvalī or aureole, pierced decorative panels and ornamental finials.

The composition is characteristic of Kathmandu Valley / Newar Buddhist metalwork, produced for devotional use throughout Nepal, Tibet and the wider Himalayan Buddhist world.

The sculpture is of traditional multi-part construction, combining a hollow-cast figure with separately made architectural and decorative elements. The highly finished devotional front contrasts with the more utilitarian reverse, consistent with a shrine figure intended primarily to be viewed frontally.

The copper-alloy surface has developed an attractive worn gilt-toned appearance, extensive darkened patination and naturally concentrated areas of verdigris oxidation, particularly around the lotus throne, lower body and protected recesses. Interior photographs reveal rough traditional lost-wax casting texture, porosity, deposits and oxidation consistent with historic workshop manufacture.

There are losses and damage to sections of the ornate backplate and aureole, wear and minor losses to projecting extremities, and substantial verdigris around the lower lotus-throne area. Some thinner architectural elements show distortion or old movement. The reverse retains rough workshop finishing and casting marks. No attempt has been made to clean or restore the piece.
