Antique Tibetan Nepalese Bronze Tara Figure Buddhist Himalayan Shrine Statue C.1900 14cm

An attractive antique Nepalese / Newar bronze figure of Green Tara (Śyāmatārā), probably dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.

Green Tara is depicted seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, with the left leg folded and the right leg pendant, symbolising her readiness to come to the aid of devotees. Her right hand is lowered in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and compassion, while the left hand is raised in vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and discussion.

A pair of stylised utpala lotus stems rise beside the shoulders, while the figure wears an elaborate foliate crown, necklaces, armlets and finely detailed robes. A third eye is visible on the forehead.

The figure is seated upon an openwork lotus throne with a projecting lotus supporting the pendant foot. The reverse is fully modelled, including the bound hair, jewellery and drapery, reflecting traditional Newar workshop practice.

The bronze has developed an attractive dark brown-black patina, with lighter rubbing to raised areas from age and handling. The underside of the base is open and any original sealing or consecration plate is now absent.

The style, iconography and casting are consistent with Kathmandu Valley / Newar Buddhist bronze production, made for devotional use within the broader Himalayan Buddhist tradition.

Condition: Good antique condition overall, with age-related surface wear, rubbing, patina variation, minor casting irregularities and small areas of oxidation. Wear is present to projecting extremities including lotus tips, crown and fingers. The base remains open and unsealed. No obvious major structural damage is apparent from inspection of the photographs. Please examine all images carefully as they form an important part of the description.
