CKB LTD Emporium & Collectables has dated this Carved Amber Shoulao Pendant to the 1900s.
Standing approximately 7cm high and weighing 24.7g, the figure is carved from translucent honey/cognac-coloured material, catalogued by the auction house from which it was acquired as amber.

Shoulao is depicted with his characteristic exaggerated domed forehead, long flowing beard and traditional robes. Despite its small scale, the carving incorporates extensive detail, including finely incised decoration and numerous auspicious coin-like motifs across the robes.

When held to the light, the material displays attractive translucency ranging from golden honey to deeper cognac-brown tones.
Of particular interest are two drilled suspension/attachment holes, suggesting the carving may originally have been intended to be suspended, worn or attached, possibly functioning as an auspicious amulet or pendant. Its precise original function cannot be established with certainty.

Material: Catalogued as amber. The material has not been independently gemologically tested and is therefore described according to the previous auction-house attribution rather than accompanied by certification of natural amber.
