Antique Chinese Amber Shoulao God Longevity Carved Figure Pendant C1900 7cm 25g

1900 - 1920
Description

Chinese Carved Amber Shoulao – God of Longevity, c.1900

An attractive Chinese carved figure of Shoulao (Shou Xing), the God of Longevity, dating to the late Qing / early 20th century, circa 1900.

Standing approximately 7cm high and weighing 24.7g, the figure is carved from translucent honey/cognac-coloured material, catalogued by the auction house from which it was acquired as amber.

Shoulao is depicted with his characteristic exaggerated domed forehead, long flowing beard and traditional robes. Despite its small scale, the carving incorporates extensive detail, including finely incised decoration and numerous auspicious coin-like motifs across the robes.

When held to the light, the material displays attractive translucency ranging from golden honey to deeper cognac-brown tones.

Of particular interest are two drilled suspension/attachment holes, suggesting the carving may originally have been intended to be suspended, worn or attached, possibly functioning as an auspicious amulet or pendant. Its precise original function cannot be established with certainty.

Material: Catalogued as amber. The material has not been independently gemologically tested and is therefore described according to the previous auction-house attribution rather than accompanied by certification of natural amber.

Shoulao is the Taoist god of longevity, traditionally depicted with a high forehead and holding a staff or peach. Carvings of this deity in amber were popular protective talismans during the late Qing dynasty, representing wishes for long life and prosperity.

Chinese craftsmen utilised natural materials such as jade, amber, coral, ivory, and soapstone. Amber was particularly prized for its warm translucency, lightness, and tactile qualities when carved into wearable pendants or toggles.

Authentic antique amber exhibits subtle natural inclusions, light surface wear, and microscopic tool marks from hand carving. It is also lightweight compared to glass or synthetic imitations and floats in concentrated salt water.

Small carved amber objects are frequently displayed on custom metal mounts inside glazed vitrines or placed within shadow boxes. They are also incorporated into contemporary jewellery designs or presented on dark wood stands in curated cabinet displays.

Amber should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and harsh chemicals such as perfumes or solvents. Clean gently using a soft, lint-free damp cloth, and store in a soft pouch to prevent scratching.
