CKB LTD Emporium & Collectables has dated this Rose Quartz Laughing Buddha to the 1900s.
His jovial expression is particularly appealing, with smiling features, elongated earlobes and carefully delineated facial details.

The natural stone displays attractive variations of soft translucent pink, together with paler crystalline areas, inclusions and internal fissures characteristic of rose quartz. These variations have been effectively incorporated into the carving and give the figure considerable visual character.

Budai became one of the most recognisable figures in Chinese Buddhist and popular art, traditionally associated with happiness, contentment, prosperity and abundance, and was subsequently identified with Maitreya, the future Buddha.

The carving is presented on a fitted Chinese hardwood stand, individually shaped to accommodate the irregular base of the figure and raised on small shaped feet.
A decorative and substantial example of late Qing/early 20th-century Chinese hardstone carving.

Condition: Antique condition with historic damage and restoration. There are visible fractures and apparent old repairs, particularly around the head/neck, shoulder and areas of the body, together with natural fissures, small chips, surface wear and marks. The rose quartz itself contains numerous natural inclusions and internal fissures. The hardwood stand has age-related wear. Despite these faults, the figure presents attractively. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form part of the condition report.
