Antique 19th Century Burmese Patinated Bronze Shakyamuni Buddha

An evocative antique Burmese (Myanmar) bronze figure of Shakyamuni Buddha, probably dating from the 19th century, finely modelled in a seated meditative posture and retaining a rich, naturally aged dark-brown patina.

Despite measuring only approximately 11.5cm high, this is a remarkably substantial bronze, weighing approximately 700 grams.

The figure was previously catalogued at auction as:

“Chinese/Burmese School (18th/19th century), a brown patinated bronze Buddha.”

On stylistic examination, we believe a Burmese / Myanmar attribution is the more convincing, probably 19th century.

SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA

Buddha is depicted seated in meditation, wearing flowing monastic robes draped across one shoulder and falling in deeply modelled folds across the body.

His face has a wonderfully serene expression, with downcast eyes, a finely modelled nose and mouth, elongated pendant earlobes and tightly arranged curls rising into the prominent ushnisha, symbolising the Buddha’s enlightened wisdom.

The robes are extensively worked with fine incised and chased lines, contrasting beautifully with the smoother exposed areas of the chest, shoulder and arms.

EARTH-TOUCHING GESTURE

The Buddha’s extended right arm reaches downward in the traditional bhumisparsha mudra, or “earth-touching” gesture.

This is one of the most important images in Buddhist iconography, representing the moment when Shakyamuni called upon the Earth to witness his enlightenment following his victory over Mara.

TRADITIONALLY CAST BRONZE

The figure has been hollow cast in bronze/copper alloy and retains material within the underside of the base together with an internal metal support/brace visible from beneath.

The bronze possesses a particularly attractive deep brown patina, with natural variation and warmer highlights visible on exposed areas.

Considerable detail survives throughout, particularly to the curled hair, facial features, fingers, toes and richly folded monastic robes.

The combination of relatively small dimensions and approximately 700g weight gives the sculpture an unusually substantial presence in the hand.

CONDITION

Good antique condition overall with considerable age-related surface wear, rubbing, scratches, casting irregularities, deposits and variations to the patina.

There are areas of wear and minor losses to the detailed robe decoration, particularly to the reverse, together with old surface deposits and accretions.

The underside remains unfinished/open and contains old core/filling material and an internal metal support. This should be regarded as part of the object’s historic construction rather than a decorative finished surface.

The bronze has not been aggressively cleaned or polished, preserving its aged surface and patina.
