Artsonline has dated this Chinese Limestone Buddha Head to a period before the 16th Century.
Brief Description:

This beautifully modelled sculptural fragment depicts the Buddha with a serene meditative expression, downcast eyes, gently smiling lips, elongated earlobes and tightly arranged curls rising to the traditional ushnisha.

The stone is heavy, and it displays an attractive naturally aged surface, with visible carving and tool marks together with areas of wear and weathering consistent with the considerable age attributed to the piece.

Particularly interesting is the unfinished and irregular nature of the reverse and lower neck, clearly showing the head as a surviving sculptural fragment rather than having originally been conceived as a freestanding object.

The head is now sensitively presented upon a later bespoke black display stand, which provides an excellent contrast against the pale limestone and allows the sculpture to be appreciated from all angles.

A wonderfully atmospheric piece of Chinese Buddhist sculpture, displaying beautifully as both an antiquity and a decorative work of art.
