George III Staffordshire Creamware Masonic Jug, Black Transfer Print, C.1810

Description

An English creamware Masonic jug from the George III period, made in Staffordshire circa 1810. It is a particularly attractive cabinet-size example, with a rounded body, a high neck, shaped pouring spout and a loop handle with an integral finger-rest.

The cream ground is decorated with detailed black transfer prints. One side is occupied by an armorial Masonic design based on the arms of the Masons' Company of London, showing a shield with a chevron and three castles. The scene also incorporates the pillars of Jachin and Boaz, each carrying a globe, a seated master architect, a beehive, the chequered pavement, Sun, Moon and stars. Below is the Masonic motto "SIT LUX ET LUX FUIT".

The opposite side carries the complete seven-line Consecration Anthem beginning "Hail! MASONRY divine!". It is enclosed by a large floral wreath incorporating Masonic tools, with the All-Seeing Eye and a Blazing Star containing the letter "G" above. The base is unmarked and retains an old collection label numbered "148".

Condition

The jug is in ideal condition, an unusually scarce state of preservation for a creamware vessel over 200 years old. There are no cracks, chips, repairs, restoration or repainting. UV examination revealed no concealed problems. The only age-related feature is an even overall crazing to the glaze. All closely comparable early 19th-century Masonic creamware jugs located during research had cracks or other structural damage.
