A whatnot is a tiered open shelving unit introduced in the late 18th century during the Georgian period. Designed to hold books, ornaments, and curiosities, these freestanding pieces featured lightweight timber frames, often fitted with lower drawers and castors for portability.

Georgian whatsits were predominantly crafted from high-quality hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Components were joined using hand-cut dovetails, with turned upright supports, thin shelf veneers, and brass hardware including knobs and brass cup castors.

Authentic George III examples exhibit hand-carved turned supports, period-correct brass castors with original screws, and hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer lining. Additionally, natural shrinkage marks, honest timber wear, and genuine oxidisation on the underside of the mahogany shelves indicate age.
