Description

Early 20th Century Gabon Fang Byeri Reliquary Guardian Head – African Tribal Art

Brief Description:

This is a striking early 20th-century carved wooden Fang Byeri-style Reliquary Guardian Head, originating from Gabon, Central Africa.

Dating to circa 1900-1930, the substantial hand-carved head is modelled with a distinctive large, domed forehead, stylised facial features, an elongated, cylindrical neck, and an elaborate carved coiffure.

The hairstyle is particularly impressive, with a raised central crest decorated with multiple rounded bosses and long segmented tresses extending around the sides and rear of the head.

The neck is pierced with a series of holes, consistent with the traditional method used to attach Fang reliquary guardian carvings to ancestral reliquary containers.

The carving has a wonderful dark, lustrous and extensively worn surface, with areas of lighter timber showing through and a superb aged appearance throughout.

Now mounted upon a later ebonised wooden display plinth.

A highly decorative and evocative example of Central African tribal art that displays magnificently.

Attributes:

Fang / Gabon

Central African

Byeri-style Reliquary Guardian Head

Hand-carved wood

Circa: 1900-1930

Height: 34.7 cm including stand

Condition:

The piece is offered in good original antique condition commensurate with its considerable age and history.

There are various old losses, chips, surface abrasions and areas of wear throughout, with more notable losses to several sections of the carved coiffure/tresses, particularly around the sides and rear.

There is also evidence of historic insect activity and general deterioration to some areas of the timber.

These imperfections have been left entirely visible and, in our opinion, contribute considerably to the wonderfully aged character and appearance of the piece.

Please study all images carefully as they form an integral part of the condition report.

Overall Measurements:

INCHES & CENTIMETRES

Height: 13.7'' | 34.7 cm

Width: 6.5'' | 16.5 cm

Depth: 7.2'' | 18.2 cm

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Fang Byeri reliquary head is a carved wooden ancestral figure or bust created by the Fang people of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon. Traditionally placed atop cylindrical bark containers storing ancestral bones, these heads functioned as spiritual guardians to ward off evil and connect living relatives with their deceased ancestors.

Fang sculptures are typically hand-carved from local hardwoods and treated with palm oil, plant resins, or soot, which created a protective dark surface coating. Some examples feature inlaid metal eyes, shell accents, or brass details, accompanied by drilled holes along the neck or scalp for attachments.

Authentic period pieces exhibit characteristic stylistic markers, including a dominant rounded forehead, concave face, heart-shaped eye sockets, and a central hairstyle crest. Indications of age include natural wood shrinkage, surface patination from ritual oil libations, and signs of functional wear rather than artificial distressing.

Sculptural ethnographic pieces serve as dramatic focal points when displayed on gallery plinths, bookshelves, or mantels. Pairing dark wooden carvings against neutral backdrops or alongside structured contemporary furniture highlights their organic geometry and tactile wood surfaces.

Carved wooden sculptures should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and excess moisture to prevent cracking or warping. Dusting should be done gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical polishes that could strip the original surface patina.
