Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual 19th-century antique rocking settle is made entirely from solid pine or fruitwood in a warm brown colour with a heavily weathered, authentic dry timber patina showing age-related wear and minor knocks. The rustic country farmhouse design incorporates a wide, long plank seat, two horizontal back slats, and two elongated curved wooden rockers at the base, along with oversized open scrollwork arms featuring tight spiral terminals. Measuring 75 cm high, 210.5 cm wide, and 83 cm deep, this substantial piece sits directly on the floor on its curved rocking runners. It provides a striking seating option for a large hallway, a spacious country kitchen, or an open-plan living room where multiple people can sit together.

FAQs

A rocking settle is a long wooden bench mounted on curved rocking runners, traditionally crafted for country kitchens and hearths during the 18th and 19th centuries to seat multiple occupants while providing a gentle rocking motion.

These benches were typically constructed from locally sourced native hardwoods and softwoods such as pine, oak, elm, or ash, joined using mortise and tenon joints or wooden dowels to withstand continuous movement.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the presence of hand-planed timber, irregular wear on the underside of the wooden rockers, traditional joinery techniques, and natural surface patination in areas of frequent hand contact.

A rocking settle can be positioned in an entryway, hallway, or open-plan living room to introduce structural texture and warmth, complemented by neutral linen cushions or woven wool throws.

Care for the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, and applying clear beeswax sparingly to protect the finish.
