A Rare and Substantial Ming Dynasty Calcified Jade Figural Group of the Hehe Erxian Twins Circa 1600

16th century
Description

A Rare and Substantial Ming Dynasty Calcified Jade Figural Group of the Hehe Erxian Twins

circa 1600

An exceptional and powerfully tactile Ming dynasty figural group, expertly carved from a dense white stone transformed by a striking historical thermal alteration (huoshaoyu or "burnt jade" effect), resulting in a deep, variegated espresso-and-caramel patination with luminous core highlights. Measuring 12.5 cm in height and possessing an extraordinary, hand-filling weight of 621 grams, the piece displays an immense density and sculptural gravity characteristic of high-status scholar's objects from the period.

The subject depicts the Hehe Erxian—the legendary twin immortals of harmony and union—modeled with characteristic folk charm and serene, archaic-revival facial features. One twin is portrayed kneeling while carefully clasping a round wicker-textured box, symbolizing unity and fortune, while the companion stands closely behind with hands resting affectionately upon the kneeling figure’s shoulders. The carving is executed with deep, unhurried linear incisions defining the stylized robes, neatly combed hair sections, and naturalistic contours, showing a masterclass in utilizing the natural matrix flaws and thermal discoloration of the stone to accentuate the dynamic interplay between the figures.

Acquired from a prestigious UK fine Asian art sale and subsequently entering The G.S. May Esquire Private Collection, London.

This rare heavy-weight figural group represents an outstanding convergence of exceptional material density, excellent preservation, and quintessential Ming literati iconography.

Dimensions: Height: 12.5 cm

Weight: 621 g

Period: Ming Dynasty (circa 1600)

Provenance: Acquired from a prestigious fine Asian art house; The G.S. May Esquire Private Collection, London

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
