Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A whatnot is a piece of open-tiered shelving introduced in the late eighteenth century and widely produced during the Victorian era. It was designed to display ornaments, books, and curiosities within drawing rooms and parlours.

Victorian whatnots were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. They typically feature hand-turned or carved support columns, including barley twist motifs, connected to shaped timber shelves.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature spiralled turning with subtle hand-finished variations rather than perfectly uniform modern machine cuts. Inspection of the underside reveals hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery, and natural timber age marks.

A corner whatnot fits into underutilised alcoves or corner spaces to display ceramics, folded textiles, or indoor plants. Its open framework preserves visual space while introducing vertical storage to a room.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain twice per year. Position the piece away from direct heat sources, damp areas, and harsh sunlight to avoid timber warping or fading.
