Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture incorporates architectural elements from medieval Europe, such as pointed arches, tracery, carved panelling, and heraldic motifs. Popularised during the 19th century, particularly by makers like Gillows, this style emphasised solid woods like oak alongside detailed hand craftsmanship.

19th-century benches were typically constructed using solid European oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery for structural stability. Decorative features often included hand-carved central medallions, turned spindles, and carved rails, complemented by woven or upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carved details with subtle variations, period-appropriate joinery techniques, and genuine timber wear around high-touch areas like armrests and legs. Maker stamps or stencilled marks from noted firms like Gillows may also be present on the underside or rear frame.

A Gothic oak bench serves as a focal piece in a hallway, entryway, or boot room. Modern spaces benefit from balancing its dark, structured wood frame with light neutral walls, structured linen cushions, or contemporary minimalist artwork.

Maintain antique oak by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying high-grade beeswax once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Keep the bench away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or splitting of the timber.
