A Pair of Hand Sculpted Pottery Owls on a Ebonised Base

A superb large English pottery sculpture, hand modelled in clay and fired with a rich reddish glaze and beautifully shaded detailing. Dating to circa 1934, it depicts a charming pair of young owls sitting closely together, patiently waiting for a parent to return with food.

The sculpture is exceptionally well modelled, with wonderful attention to the individual feathers, expressive features and naturalistic form. It is initialled “S W 1934” to the underside and is presented on its original handmade ebonised wooden base, which has been specially fitted to support and display the sculpture.

A particularly appealing and characterful piece, in good original condition with no restoration. The combination of its scale, quality of modelling and charming subject makes this an excellent decorative sculpture for both collectors and lovers of wildlife inspired ceramics.
