Campaign Military Chest Transporting Packing Case - 19th-century (1 of 2)

19th century
Description

Antique 19th Century packing or transporting case (one of a set of two). These types of packing cases are rare survivors indeed, as they were used to carry and protect, from the rigours of campaign life, each section of a military secretaire chest of drawers. We have sympathetically “upgraded” this case adding a set of four industrial wheels the base.

Purchased together, they form a highly distinctive set of large bedside cabinets for a spacious bedroom. And by simply removing the wheels from at least one of the cases, these authentic pieces can be restacked into a single, striking tallboy unit.

Probably made of pine and strengthened with iron strap work and with internal movable shelves the case has been over painted a few times and have had some restorations to the bottom parts of the case.

Wear and tear commensurate with age and use with paint chips here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These cases were designed for military officers and personnel to transport personal belongings, furniture, and equipment safely across territories during active deployment.

They were typically constructed from robust softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or teak, joined with iron fitments and painted or waxed for weather resistance.

Authentic examples feature heavy-duty joinery, hand-cut dovetails, iron hinges or latches, original painted surfaces, and historical travel markings or stencilled labels.

These versatile utilitarian chests work exceptionally well as coffee tables, low sideboards, or end-of-bed storage units within contemporary, industrial, or rustic settings.

Maintain the surface by dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh cleansers that could damage historic paint layers, and keeping the wood away from direct heat sources.
