An Exceptional 19th Century Italian Carved Walnut Pedestal Stand

19th century
Description

An imposing and highly decorative 19th-century Italian solid walnut pedestal stand, expertly hand-carved in the Renaissance Revival manner. This sculptural, exhibition-quality piece is ideally suited for displaying a marble bust, bronze statuary, or a fine ceramic vase.

The central focal point features an exquisitely executed, high-relief carving of a playful putto (cherub) framed within a stylised cartouche. The vertical silhouette is masterfully balanced, featuring dense panels of geometric lattice basketweave carving bordered by architectural scrollwork, foliate motifs, and fluted fans.

The stand retains a beautifully rich patina highlighting the natural grain configuration of the solid walnut timber. It terminates on striking, deeply carved scroll feet that subtly evoke stylised sea dolphins or mythical creatures. The serpentine-shaped top offers a secure platform, supported down the centre by a matching lower shelf brace.

A magnificent, highly ornate statement piece showcasing true Italian woodworking craftsmanship.

Presented in very fine antique condition, displaying a magnificent rich patina. The walnut shows minor surface wear, light scuffs, and natural shrinkage cracks consistent with age and use. As is typical with genuine 19th-century Italian timber, there are some historic woodworm traces; this is entirely inactive and has been thoroughly treated as a precautionary measure. Structurally exceptional, rock-solid, and ready for immediate display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Italian Renaissance Revival furniture features deep relief carving, architectural silhouettes, and motifs drawn from classical antiquity such as cherubs, acanthus leaves, and scrollwork.

Dense hardwoods like walnut were predominantly utilised due to their tight grain, which allows for intricate hand-carving and durability under decorative loads.

Authentic period pieces display subtle variations in carving depth, hand-tool marks within recessed areas, and natural patination accumulated in the detailed crevices.

Designers position carved pedestals in foyers, stairwells, or empty corners as focal points to elevate marble busts, bronzes, or large ceramic vessels.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly into the timber grain, avoiding excess accumulation in intricate carved recesses.
