Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century in France, ecclesiastical wood carvings were commissioned for churches, chapels, and private devotional spaces. Sculptors crafted representations of biblical figures and saints, utilizing classical draping techniques and traditional iconographic attributes to aid in devotional focus.

Continental craftsmen predominantly used dense European hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or lime. The figures were carved from solid timber blocks and either finished with natural waxes and oils or painted with polychrome finishes and gilding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit distinct hand-chisel marks, natural timber shrinkage across the grain, and historical wear patterns where the figure would be handled. Original sculptures also frequently show age-related cracking, remnants of old wax finishes, or early woodworm flight holes.

Place the sculpture as a focal accent on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or within a curated bookcase alongside minimalist ceramics and natural stone elements. Setting the dark timber against a neutral background creates a striking contrast that highlights the relief work.

Keep the wood sculpture in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity shifts to prevent timber splitting. Dust regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush, and apply clear microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the existing patina.
