Imari porcelain originates from the town of Arita in Japan, named after the port of Imari from which it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. The style is characterised by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and gilt decoration.

Authentic Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired porcelain kaolin clay, decorated with an underglaze cobalt blue scheme, fired, and subsequently decorated with overglaze enamels including iron red and burnished gold leaf before a second lower-temperature firing.

Authentic antique Imari porcelain features slight hand-painted irregularities, visible brushstrokes in the iron-red overglaze enamel, hand-finished cobalt blue underglaze shading, and occasionally spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports.

These decorative ceramic plates can be arranged as a curated gallery wall collection, displayed individually on plate stands upon a sideboard top, or housed inside a traditional glazed cabinet to provide visual texture and rich colour contrast.

Clean Imari porcelain gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, or dishwashers, as these can wear away the delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
