Antique Japanese Meiji Imari Oval Porcelain Dishes – Pair

Description

An antique Japanese Meiji pair of unusual Imari porcelain dishes with scalloped oval forms and richly hand-painted decoration.

Each dish is centred by a bold underglaze blue geometric flowerhead enclosed by concentric blue borders. The surrounding decoration is arranged in alternating shaped panels filled with stylised flowers, foliage, fruit and exotic birds.

The vibrant palette combines traditional Imari iron red and cobalt blue with green, turquoise, pink, yellow and gilt highlights. Circular floral reserves and richly patterned borders create an especially decorative and detailed composition.

Their unusual oval shape and gently scalloped rims distinguish them from the more commonly found circular Imari plates. The reverse of each dish is decorated with freely painted underglaze blue motifs.

A striking pair of antique Japanese dishes suitable for display in a cabinet, on a wall or as decorative centrepieces.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced originally in Arita and exported via the port of Imari. Meiji period (18681912) pieces are characterised by intricate hand-painted designs featuring underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilded details.

These ceramics were crafted from kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. Artisans painted patterns using underglaze cobalt blue before the initial firing, after which overglaze enamels such as iron-red and gold leaf were applied during subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces display subtle variations inherent to hand-painting, small spur marks on the base from kiln supports, a deep underglaze blue, and gentle age-related surface wear to the overglaze gilding and enamels.

Imari porcelain integrates into modern or classical interiors when mounted in gallery wall arrangements, displayed upright on a mantelpiece plate stand, or positioned on a sideboard to add colour and historic pattern.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild washing-up liquid with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, chemicals, or dishwashers, which can degrade fragile overglaze enamel and gilding.
