Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantel mirror, traditionally known as a chimney glass, is a broad decorative mirror crafted to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 19th century, these mirrors were designed to maximize natural and candle light while complementing the architectural proportions of formal reception rooms.

Victorian overmantel frames were constructed using timber carcasses, often pine, coated with molded plaster or gesso composition for detailed ornamentation. The exterior was finished using gold leaf gilding over a clay bole base, framing heavy hand-cut plate glass.

Authentic period mirrors feature backboards made of timber planks, subtle reddish or grey clay bole showing through worn gilding, and minor age-related foxing on the glass. The carved or composition ornament exhibits fine craftsmanship typical of 19th-century manufacturing rather than uniform modern resin castings.

A large gilt overmantel mirror functions as a focal architectural feature when positioned above a fireplace in modern or traditional settings. It can also be placed atop a hall console table or mounted on a dark feature wall to reflect light and balance clean modern furnishings.

Dust giltwood frames using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or liquid solvents that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean glass plate by applying cleaner to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying directly onto the mirror, preventing moisture from seeping under the frame border.
