Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror from the Victorian period is designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, featuring a wide base and an arched or rectangular silhouette. These frames typically feature gilded finishes, moulded gesso detailing, and decorative cresting inspired by Classical and Rococo styles.

Victorian gilt mirror frames were typically constructed from a carved wooden core covered with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to mould intricate decorative details. Gold leaf was then applied over the gesso, over hand-blown or early plate glass mirror panes.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors usually show natural signs of age, such as slight cracking or craquelure in the gesso, wear to the gilding revealing the reddish clay bole beneath, and minor foxing or oxidisation spots on the mirror glass. The back boards are typically constructed from pine paneling with hand-cut fastenings.

Positioning a gilded overmantel mirror above a central fireplace or on a feature wall creates depth and reflects natural ambient light across a room. Paired with modern minimalist decor or classical architecture, the warm metallic finish serves as an accent focal point.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive chemical polish which can strip original gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent moisture from seeping into the frame rebate.
