Overmantel mirrors were designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring wide, arched or rectangular profiles with carved gesso and gilded frames to reflect light within Victorian reception rooms.

Frames were typically constructed from carved timber coated in gessoa compound of binder, chalk, and pigmentbefore being finished with water or oil gilding using thin sheets of gold leaf.
