Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian overmantel mirrors became prominent during the 19th century as fireplace mantels turned into central decorative features of formal reception rooms. Designed to reflect candlelight and gas light, these mirrors featured arched tops and gilded wood frames that matched the architectural proportions of Victorian chimneypieces.

These mirrors were constructed using timber sub-frames overlaid with carved plaster or gesso moulding, which was then decorated with hand-applied gold leaf. The reflective panel traditionally consisted of silvered glass or mercury-backed glass set into the timber backboard.

Authentic pieces feature wooden backboards, natural age-related foxing on the glass plate, and minor wear to the gilding where the red or grey clay bolus base shows through. Weight is also a factor, as solid wood and gesso frames with original plate glass are substantially heavier than modern reproductions.

Place the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or resting atop a low console table to draw the eye upward and expand visual depth. Combining historical gilded finishes with minimalist modern paint schemes creates a balanced contrast within contemporary living spaces.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners which can dissolve gesso and lift gold leaf. Clean the glass panel separately using a lightly damp cloth, ensuring no moisture touches the edge of the frame.
