Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, historically referred to as a chimney glass, is a large decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Originating in the late 17th century, these mirrors became prominent architectural features in Georgian, Regency, and Victorian interiors to reflect light and expand the feel of the room.

19th-century gilt mirrors typically feature a hand-carved timber frame coated with gesso, a fine plaster base, before genuine gold leaf is applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit light surface wear to the gold leaf that reveals red or yellow clay bole underneath, hand-carved wood joinery on the backboard, and original glass showing subtle oxidation or foxing.

Positioning the mirror above a contemporary fireplace, console table, or architectural feature creates an immediate focal point. Combining rich historic gilding with clean modern lines provides a balanced contrast in both period and contemporary settings.

Avoid liquid glass cleaners on the gilded frame, as moisture can dissolve the gesso foundation and loosen the gold leaf. Dust the frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, and clean the glass using a slightly dampened cloth kept clear of the frame edges.
