A lowboy is a small dressing table or side table with drawers, typically raised on four legs, which originated in the late 17th century and gained popularity throughout the 18th century during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid oak or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, pegged mortise and tenon framing, and turned or cabriole legs.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage consistent with age, period hardware or the presence of old brass escutcheons, and overall patination of the wood.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console, a compact writing desk, or a sophisticated bedroom dressing table, contrasting well against minimalist modern backdrops.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to protect the timber surface.
