Victorian footstools evolved significantly during the 19th century, transitioning from small functional hearth accessories to elaborate, highly decorated furnishings that reflected the periods love for comfort and detailed craftsmanship.

These pieces were typically built using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut for the frames, paired with traditional stuffing materials like horsehair, wool, and webbed bases beneath the upholstery.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining the construction techniques, such as traditional joinery, hand-carved details, timber oxidisation, and the type of fixings and webbing used on the underside.

An antique footstool can be used as a practical low seat, placed at the end of a bed, or positioned beneath a window to add historical texture and contrasting scale to modern interiors.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, applying appropriate beeswax polish sparingly, and vacuuming upholstered surfaces gently with a soft brush attachment.
