Description
This finely modelled figure is captured in a powerful, low-slung tension, with its head turned sharply to the left and jaws open in a silent roar.
The craftsmanship is exemplary of the Qianlong period, featuring:
Exquisite Inlay: The creature is embellished with brilliant gold-inlaid eyebrows, horns, and facial features, providing a striking contrast against the deep, chocolate-brown patina of the bronze.
Dynamic Modelling: The muscular haunches are accented by scrolling "flame" motifs cast in low relief, with a bifurcated tail that sweeps elegantly around the flank.
Silver Detailing: Delicate silver-wire inlay traces arching cloud or smoke patterns across the spine, adding a layer of ethereal movement to the solid form.
Tactile Patina: The surface has been worn smooth by centuries of handling, resulting in a rich, lustrous "skin" that is highly sought after by scholars and collectors of Chinese scholar’s studio objects (Wenfang Sipao).

In Chinese mythology, the Bixie is a protective creature believed to ward off evil spirits and attract wealth. During the 18th century, such high-quality bronzes were essential ornaments for the scholar’s desk, serving both a functional purpose as a paperweight and a spiritual one as a guardian of the study.
