Antique Mahal Carpet

Description

A lovely antique Mahal carpet dating from the early 20th century, in brilliant full pile and condition. A soft wool pile all over and woven with natural dyes, we can see a variety of muted greens and pale blues, delicate pinks and hints of yellow. All on a soft red main background colour, all professionally cleaned and in original order it is ready to use on the floor.  Not having a central medallion makes this an easy antique carpet to place in a variety of rooms.  Woven around circa 1910 the colours have faded beautifully, these decorative carpets are full of charm and suit country houses to London apartments.

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak region in central Persia, woven predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for their suppler weaves, large-scale floral patterns, and subtle, muted vegetable dyes.

These carpets typically feature a hand-spun wool pile woven using asymmetrical knots on a sturdy cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is coloured using naturally derived plant and mineral pigments, such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variations in shade known as abrash due to hand-dyed wool batches. The weave is looser compared to urban workshop carpets, resulting in a flexible body and characteristic floral palmette designs with broad borders.

A traditional Mahal carpet grounds modern minimalist, classic English Country, or Maximalist spaces by providing structural pattern and warmth. Anchor the room by placing primary seating legs partially over the carpet edges to define the conversational area.
