Antique Mahal Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A rustic antique Mahal carpet woven around 1890-1900, over 120 years old, beautifully hand-woven with terracotta, orange rust tones, ivory medallions and subtle green and blue dyes.  A deep indigo blue border frames this colour palette so well, some scattered areas of wear, but structurally secure and in original condition.  A classic country house looking carpet, with an unusual all over large scale design.

A beautiful carpet for a drawing room, bedroom, study or entrance hall for example, as antique carpets can be used anywhere in a home.  We supply anti-slip underlay with all of our carpets and rugs, to aid their strength on the floor and it also helps preserve the carpet too.  As wear is generally  caused by a carpet moving around on a floor with poor or no underlay.

Contact us to request a home visit, we have visited customers in their own homes for over 30 years. We feel it is vital to view carpets and rugs at home, so you can make the ideal choice, trying various options in a room. This is a professional and free service we have offered since 1990, we love helping make your home look even better!

You can book in a visit to our barn showroom too, we have over 1000 antique and contemporary carpets, rugs and runners on offer.  We are located in the small village of Crondall in Surrey, just outside of Farnham and around an hours drive from London.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak region in central Persia, woven predominantly during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for their wide-spaced floral motifs, large-scale medallions, and muted, natural vegetable-dye colour palettes.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile onto a cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and plant-based dyes are traditionally used to create rich terracotta, soft blue, and ivory hues.

Authentic pieces feature a relatively flexible weave with asymmetrical hand-tied knots, slight colour variations known as abrash, and soft natural wool. Examining the back reveals subtle irregularities in knotting consistent with hand craftsmanship rather than machine production.

A terracotta Mahal rug anchors contemporary spaces by adding warmth, texture, and visual grounding beneath neutral furniture. It pairs exceptionally well with dark wood antiques, sleek leather seating, or mid-century minimal aesthetics.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres, and rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear and light exposure. Professional spot cleaning or washing by a specialist rug conservator is recommended for spills.
