Antique Mahal Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

Beautiful Mahal carpet with warm colours in excellent condition all over with a high full pile.  The soft wool and design of this Mahal make it an attractive piece, that would look fantastic under a dining table or in a living room.

It has a great variety of colours, using greens, yellows, pinks and pale blues on a deep indigo blue background.  It helps not having a large central motif to place it in a drawing room or study as well, a very versatile carpet that has great potential to build a scheme around.  This piece was woven around circa 1900-1910 and has the original ends/fringes in tact, it has had some minimal tidying up in places but no major restoration or re-piling.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak region of Persia (modern-day Iran) and are known for their supple weave, large-scale floral motifs, and balanced colour palettes. Historically woven in surrounding villages, these carpets frequently feature all-over botanical motifs rather than central medallions.

Traditional Mahal carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is historically dyed using natural vegetable dyes derived from madder root, indigo, and plants to achieve rich red, blue, and cream hues.

Authentic pieces exhibit slight variations in knotting and pattern symmetry consistent with hand-weaving rather than machine manufacturing. The back of the rug shows clearly defined, visible knots matching the front pattern, and the natural dyes display subtle colour shifting, known as abrash, throughout the pile.

A Mahal rug serves as an anchor in living areas, dining rooms, or libraries, pairing naturally with dark wood, leather, or upholstered furniture. Its classical botanical pattern contrasts cleanly against neutral walls, architectural panelling, or modern minimalist furnishings.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool pile. Professional hand-cleaning by a specialist oriental rug restorer is recommended every few years, and rotating the rug annually prevents uneven wear and sun bleaching.
