19th century
Description

A rare and very beautiful pale blue Antique Ziegler rug in small size, as most Ziegler & Co workshop carpets were produced in large sizes for drawing rooms.  In excellent original condition with a soft and consistent wool pile throughout, it has the most beautiful soft colours, a classical medallion and corner spandrel design, the dyes from these late 19th century rugs in Sultanabad, Persia are quite magnificent!

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and  Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the late 19th century by the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. in Arak, Persia, these rugs were specifically commissioned to suit Western interior tastes, featuring scaled-up traditional motifs and softer, muted colour palettes.

Authentic Ziegler carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, often incorporating natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces typically feature larger floral patterns, a lower knot density compared to urban Persian rugs, soft muted tones from natural dyes, and subtle abrash shade variations across the field.

These versatile textiles bridge classical and contemporary decor by anchoring living rooms, dining spaces, or bedrooms, harmonising effortlessly with both dark wood antiques and minimalist contemporary furniture.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, address spills immediately with a damp cloth, and consult a professional rug restorer for deep cleaning.
