French Art Deco Bronze Figure of a dancer by Demetre H. Chiparus (Paris) – ‘Starfish dancer’ with arms outstretched. Highly detailed, particularly the headdress and costumery. Mounted upon a black marble socle plinth.

Signed to the base, also with bronze guarantee Paris foundry mark.

About the artist/sculptor: Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1868-1947) was a Romanian born sculptor who lived and worked in Paris during the Art Deco era. He was one of the most important sculptors of the time. He exhibited at the Salon in 1914 employing a combination of bronze and ivory (called Chryselephantine) to great effect. Most of his renowed works were from the period between 1914-1933. The 1920’s saw a focus on Dancers, especially from the Russian Ballet; French Theatre and early motion pictures. His work was heavily influenced by an interest in Egypt, after Pharoah Tutankhamen’s tomb was excavated. He worked primarily with the Edmond & Cie Foundry in Paris.
