Very attractive mid 19th century antique giltwood wall mirror or console table mirror, having original glass with minor imperfections in beaded and moulded frame decorated with flowery motifs throughout. This antique mirror retains its original glass, gilt and backboard, all in home ready condition.

Traditional French pier mirrors were crafted from carved pine or oak covered with a layer of gesso, a smooth plaster mixture. Gold leaf was applied over a coloured clay base known as bole, while the mirror plate was made using mercury-silvered glass or early float glass.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the backboard construction, which should consist of hand-sawn timber planks. Look for subtle wear on high points where the gold leaf has rubbed away to reveal red or grey bole beneath, alongside natural age-related patination on the glass surface.
