Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to hang on the wall space, known as a pier, situated between two windows. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors were placed to reflect light back into interior spaces and enhance architectural proportions.

Nineteenth-century mirrors were constructed using timber frames, such as pine or oak, overlaid with moulded gesso decorative work and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf. The reflective mirror plates of this era were typically created using mercury amalgam or early silvering processes.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors show subtle signs of age, including red or grey clay bole visible where the gilding has worn over time. Additionally, authentic pieces feature hand-sawn wooden backboards and mirror plates that display minor oxidisation, pitting, or gentle glass distortion.

An antique arched mirror can be styled as a focal point positioned above a console table or placed leaning against a wall in an entryway. The warm tones of the gold leaf frame provide a balanced contrast when paired alongside contemporary matte paint schemes and clean-lined furniture.

Gilded surfaces should only be dusted using a soft dry brush or clean feather duster to prevent disturbing fragile gold leaf. Liquid cleaners, water, and solvents must be avoided, as moisture dissolves the underlying water-gesso foundation and causes gilding loss.
