Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace hearth, featuring a wide rectangular profile to align with architectural mantels. During the 19th century, gilded frames were popularised across European interiors to amplify natural light and candlelight in grand reception rooms.

These frames were constructed from a wooden core covered in carved or moulded composition ornament, prepared with gesso, and finished using gold leaf applied through water or oil gilding techniques. The mirror glass comprised silvered plate glass or hand-blown sheet glass.

Authentic period examples demonstrate subtle wear where the red clay bole or white gesso ground shows through the gold leaf, alongside natural foxing or dark oxidation spots on the glass. The rear structure typically features hand-sawn wooden backing boards secured with historical nails.

Positioning the mirror above a living room fireplace or a wide console table anchors the room and creates visual height. Combining the detailed gilded profile with minimalist contemporary furnishings creates an engaging contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern lines.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre feather duster, avoiding wet cloths or commercial cleaning liquids that dissolve traditional water gilding. Apply glass cleaner strictly to a microfiber cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass to prevent moisture accumulation behind the frame moulding.
