Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, a pier glass mirror was traditionally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier. During the Regency period, these mirrors featured classical architectural elements such as pilasters, cornices, and reverse-painted eglomise glass panels.

Regency gilt mirrors were constructed using timber framesoften pine or limecovered in gesso and decorated with water gilding or oil gilding using gold leaf. Decorative upper panels incorporated eglomise, a technique of applying gilt and paint designs directly to the reverse side of glass.

Original pieces from this era exhibit hand-carved architectural details, backboards showing age-appropriate timber shrinkage or square-headed hand-forged nails, and original glass plates with subtle silvering degradation. The gilding often demonstrates wear revealing red or yellow bole beneath the gold leaf layer.

A Regency pier glass can be mounted above a hallway console table, positioned between tall windows, or hung in a dining room to enhance natural light distribution. The gilded frame provides a clear geometric contrast when set against modern paint schemes.

Clean the mirror plate and eglomise glass with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the painted glass or gilded wood. Dust the carved gilt frame gently with a soft-bristled brush to prevent flaking of the original gesso or gold leaf.
