Pier mirrors originated in 17th and 18th-century French architecture, designed specifically to fit on the section of wall between two windows, known as the pier. These mirrors were positioned to reflect incoming daylight into reception rooms, featuring carved wooden frames coated in gesso and gold leaf.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso, and layered with clay bole before gold leaf was applied using water or oil gilding techniques. The mirror plates were historically backed with mercury or silver compounds.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display reddish or grey clay bole showing through worn areas of the gold leaf, known as rubbing. Additionally, authentic items feature hand-sawn wooden backboards, oxidised mirror glass with foxing, and hand-carved detailing.

A pair of tall pier mirrors can be placed on either side of a double doorway, set within narrow wall recesses, or positioned opposite windows to maximise natural light. Leaning them against a wall in a hallway creates vertical scale and spatial openness.

Giltwood finishes should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaning solutions that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied to a microfibre cloth rather than directly on the glass to prevent moisture from seeping into the frame moulding.
