A Victorian gilt overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Typically produced during the late nineteenth century, these mirrors feature gently arched or rectangular silhouettes, gilded timber and gesso frames, and decorative corner flourishes such as acanthus leaves or moulding.

Traditional overmantel mirrors were constructed using pine or oak bases covered in carved gesso moulding, which was then layered with genuine gold leaf gilding. The mirror plate itself was made from hand-blown flat glass, coated with mercury or silver amalgam.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature heavy timber backing boards, natural wear to the gold leaf showing underlying clay bole, and subtle silvering oxidation on the glass plate. Authentic gesso frames usually show minor age craquelure rather than modern painted finishes.

Mount the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or position it atop a hallway console table to reflect natural light. Placing period gilded frames against modern neutral or dark paint backgrounds provides depth and contrast in contemporary room schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent disturbing fragile leafing. Avoid liquid polishes, glass sprays, or water on the giltwood frame, applying mirror cleaner only directly to a cloth for the glass plate.
