Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Giltwood mirrors became prominent in 17th and 18th-century Europe, particularly in France and Britain, as symbols of status and light reflection. Craftsmen applied thin gold leaf over carved wood frame bases to enhance interior illumination before electric light existed.

Traditional giltwood mirror frames are constructed from hand-carved timber, often covered with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to create smooth surfaces or detailed moulded relief. Gold leaf is then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before the mirror plate is fitted.

Authentic period giltwood pieces often display natural wear on raised edges, revealing underlying red or yellow bole clay through the gold layer. Examination of the reverse typically shows hand-sawn backboards and age-appropriate oxidisation on the original mirror glass.

Positioning a heavy giltwood mirror above a simple contemporary console table or fireplace mantel creates an effective juxtaposition of textures. The gold finish complements neutral colour palettes while serving as an architectural focal point in living or reception rooms.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that can dissolve gesso and remove gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the mirror surface to protect the frame edge.
