A French marriage mirror, or trumeau de mariage, was traditionally gifted to a bride and groom on their wedding day in 18th and 19th-century France to symbolise prosperity and marital harmony.

These mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden frames covered in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding, housing either mercury glass or early plate glass.

Authentic pieces show natural wear to the gilding revealing red or grey bole underneath, hand-carved joinery details on the reverse, and appropriate age-related foxing to the mirror plate.

Place the mirror above a narrow console table or within a gallery wall to contrast classical gilded ornamentation against clean, contemporary lines.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents which can dissolve the water gilding and damage the gesso base.
