Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow wall mirror originally designed to be mounted on the pier, which is the wall space between two windows. These mirrors were created to reflect light back into the room and enhance the spatial grandeur of 18th and 19th-century interiors.

19th-century gilt mirrors typically feature a carved wooden core covered with gesso, a composite substrate made of chalk and size. Gold leaf was then applied over the gesso using either water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding mercury or silver-backed mirror glass.

Authentic period gilding displays natural wear, slight cracking known as craquelure, and areas where the underlying red or grey clay bole shows through the gold leaf. The back boards usually show dark age-related patination and hand-carved wood joinery rather than modern staples or ply.

A gilt pier mirror can be positioned above a modern console table or fireplace mantel to create a focal point. Placing the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light, bridging classic architectural detailing with contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can dissolve water-based gilding. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden frame.
