Large Regency Gilt Pier Glass Dressing Mirror

Description

This LARGE REGENCY GILT PIER GLASS DRESSING MIRROR stands 60 inches (153 cm) tall. The fluted frame retains its original gilding with signs of the red and black bole beneath.

The wooden panelled back bears a paper label which advertises ‘ R. NURSE CARVER-GILDER, PICTURE AND GLASS FRAME MANUFACTURER, 27 ST. JAMES STREET, LYNN. LADIES NEEDLE WORK NEATLY FRAMED & GLAZ’D. OLD GLASSES POLISHED. ELDRIDGE LYNN’.

In good original, unrestored condition.

The old glass has slight spotting at the base.

The MIRROR is sturdy and has four mirror plates on the back.

A Regency pier mirror, or pier glass, is a tall, narrow mirror designed during the early 19th century to fit on the structural wall space between two large windows. These mirrors were created to maximize natural light reflections and feature Neoclassical decorative elements such as fluting, columns, and leaf motifs.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed from pine or lime wood frames, often finished with molded composition ornament. The frame surface was treated with red or yellow clay bole and finished with hand-applied gold leaf using traditional water-gilding techniques over mirrored plate glass.

Authentic Regency mirrors typically show hand-cut timber backing boards, natural oxidation or foxing spots on the silvering of the plate glass, and signs of water-gilding wear where the underlying bole shows through on high points.

A large gilt pier mirror functions effectively placed opposite doorways or between floor-to-ceiling windows to enhance spatial depth. It can also be positioned leaned against a plain wall in contemporary living areas to create a focal architectural element.
