Description

From a lifelong collection of Mason's Ironstone. A Coffee cup, circa 1890, made in the shape of early 19th-century custard cups. Quite difficult to find with saucers, as people collected them as custard cups without the saucers.

Made in the late 1890s, they were designed as a coffee cup, but had flaws with heat and the handle, so not huge amounts were made. This has led to them being very hard to find, and people collecting.

This is in  a red scale pattern pattern with a chinoiserie pattern

Masons Ironstone is a patented type of heavy earthenware developed in early 19th-century England by Charles Mason. It combined durability with the aesthetic qualities of Chinese porcelain, often featuring vibrant japanned and Imari patterns.

Ironstone china is composed of a mixture of ball clay, china stone, and finely ground slag or glass. Items were typically transfer-printed with detailed outlines and hand-enamelled in vivid colours before undergoing high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic items generally feature impressed or printed factory marks on the underside, characteristic weight and density of ironstone body, and hand-applied overglaze enamels showing appropriate age-related wear.

Antique ceramics add historic character and visual texture when displayed openly on wooden shelving, within glazed display cabinets, or used as distinctive focal points on side tables.

Pieces should be washed exclusively by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent. Abrasive sponges and harsh chemicals must be avoided to protect the delicate hand-painted overglaze enamel details.
