Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A giltwood mirror features a carved timber frame coated with thin layers of gold leaf over a plaster ground known as gesso. Popularised across Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these mirrors were engineered to maximize candlelight reflection while serving as architectural focal points.

Craftsmen sculpted intricate designs into softwoods or hardwoods before applying multiple layers of chalky gesso paste. Once smoothed, a red or yellow clay bole was applied as a binder, over which delicate sheets of genuine gold leaf were burnished using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit subtle wear where the red or dark clay bole shows beneath the gold leaf, along with fine age-related cracks termed gesso crazing. Genuine age is also indicated by slight silvering degradation on the mirror glass and hand-sawn construction marks on the timber backboard.

Positioning a large gilded mirror opposite a window optimizes natural light distribution throughout the space. Leaning the frame against a neutral wall or mounting it above a contemporary console table creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and minimalist architecture.

Avoid liquid glass cleaners and water on the frame, as moisture can dissolve traditional water gilding and damage the gesso underlying structure. Dust the carved frame using a dry feather duster or soft brush, and clean the glass plate with a lightly dampened cloth while keeping moisture clear of the gilt edges.
